The Georgia Rat and Mouse Club of America, or the GARMCA, was founded in 2004 by a group of rat-loving enthusiast who wanted to create a pet rat-based club for those within the state of Georgia. The GARMCA was formed as a full chapter of the Rat & Mouse Club of America, an nationally known and recognized rat and mouse based club here in the USA. Since then, the club has grown significantly into over 60 members and has expanded into neighboring states. The club hosts various events throughout the year that are open to both current members, interested individuals and the public.
GARMCA Main Goals:
* To promote the rat as a pet first and foremost through education, public awareness and community.
* To encourage people to come together in their love of rats and to celebrate ownership.
* To find permanent, loving, homes for our rescued rats.
* To inform the public and members about pet ownership, proper care, health and welfare.
* To promote the domesticated fancy rat as a great pet companion within the home.
RMCA Main Goals: Since we are a chapter of the Rat & Mouse Club of America, we also adhere to the following goals:
* To educate about the proper care of domestic rats and mice;
* To promote responsible pet ownership and breeding;
* To promote the rat and mouse fancy as a rewarding and enjoyable hobby;
* To be good-hearted, compassionate, and friendly at all RMCA functions;
* To be open to new ideas and allow room for growth.
GARMCA Rescue Center: In 2007, members decided to develop and establish the southeast's only foster and rehoming network for homeless and needy rats in the area. The GARMCA's Rescue Center has been registered as 501(c)3 non-profit origination. All money to support the shelter comes from individual donors and is tax deductible under IRS code. While the club was not and is not based solely as a rescue organization or shelter, we have felt the need to help the community and these creatures we love through our rescue efforts. This is a unique part of our club that is run almost entirely by volunteers headed up by our rescue and foster coordinators. Trained adoption counselors provide adopters with professional, individualized assistance to help them match a rescue rat to the right home. Most importantly of all, the GARMCA serves as a resource to the adopter for the life of the rat.
GARMCA Statistics: The GARMCA is a nonprofit club created and run based on our goals. The Rescue Center is a limited-access network of foster and quarantine homes with a small capacity at one time. Since its inception, the Rescue Center has successfully found permanent homes for more than 300 rats and 6 mice through our rescue and adoption efforts.
GARMCA Long-Term Goals: The GARMCA would like to see an increase in the number of new and current members for 2008-2009. We would like to open other sister chapters of the RMCA in neighboring states and within the outter reaches of Atlanta. We would In order to help the community further and to allow more of an impact, we would like to have our own stand alone quarantine shelter that would provide for the critical first step for the reception of new rescues into the fostering to help eliminate the high risks of rat rescue.
